Area Converter

Convert between the common area units: square meters, square feet, square yards, acres, hectares, square kilometers, and square miles. Real estate is the usual reason: listings mix square feet and square meters across markets, while land is sold in acres in some countries and hectares in others.

120 m² in ft²
1,291.66925 ft²

Area conversions catch people out because the factors are squared. A meter is 3.28 feet, but a square meter is 10.76 square feet. Doubling a room's dimensions quadruples its area, and the same square effect applies to every unit pair here.

How it's calculated

1 m² = 10.7639 ft² · 1 acre = 4,046.86 m² · 1 ha = 10,000 m²

All conversions pass through square meters. An acre is exactly 4,046.8564224 m² (a furlong by a chain in old English units), and a hectare is a square of 100 m per side. One square mile is 640 acres.

Worked example

A 120 m² apartment is 1,292 ft². A quarter-acre suburban lot is 1,012 m², about a tenth of a hectare. A 500-hectare farm is 5 km², or 1,236 acres.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet are in a square meter?

10.7639. A quick estimate multiplies square meters by 11 and shaves a bit off: 80 m² is about 860 ft² (exact: 861).

What is the difference between an acre and a hectare?

A hectare is 10,000 m² and an acre is about 4,047 m², so one hectare is roughly 2.47 acres. Hectares are metric and used in most of the world; acres persist in the US and UK.

How big is an acre in everyday terms?

About 90% of an American football field without the end zones, or a square of roughly 64 meters per side. A typical suburban house lot in the US is a fifth to a quarter of an acre.

Why can't I just square the length conversion factor?

You can, and that is exactly what these factors are: 1 ft = 0.3048 m, so 1 ft² = 0.3048² = 0.0929 m². The mistake is using the linear factor unsquared, which is off by more than 3x.
